Engineer and applied physicist with 15+ years across production machine learning, optical instrumentation, and hardware test and reliability. Recent work has centered on building AI and ML systems that ship and keep working: a retrieval-augmented LLM application serving 300+ field service engineers, predictive maintenance models over a deployed instrument fleet, and the telemetry pipelines and data governance underneath both. Earlier work built the instruments themselves — a fiber-based STED nanoscope designed and constructed from scratch, an optical coherence tomography microscope, chronically implanted neural recording hardware — and validated hardware destined for spaceflight and defense use, where every measurement was traceable and every conclusion had to survive external audit. Comfortable owning a problem from physics through data pipeline to production system, and equally comfortable being the person who says the result is not yet trustworthy.

Professional Experience

Innovations Research Scientist / R&D EngineerNov 2019 – Jul 2026

Agilent Technologies

Applied research and development for the CrossLab Connect service organization, spanning machine learning, AI systems, instrument telemetry, and emerging-technology evaluation.

Machine Learning and AI Systems

  • Designed and shipped FSE-in-a-Box, a retrieval-augmented LLM application serving 300+ field service engineers. Owned the embedding and retrieval layer, prompt and reasoning-flow design, structured output formatting, and the guardrail, fallback, and confidence logic determining when the system answers, when it defers, and when it hands off to a human.
  • Built an evaluation loop measuring output quality against real engineer queries and feeding results back into prompt and retrieval changes, so improvement was measured rather than assumed.
  • Owned a predictive maintenance system for a deployed instrument fleet end to end — feature engineering from raw telemetry, model training and validation, deployment, and monitoring for drift — so service could intervene before customers experienced a failure.
  • Managed a remote team monitoring and analyzing vacuum-pressure failure modes with a third-party vendor, establishing that power draw rises measurably with common failure modes and turning that into a usable ML data source.
  • With an interdivisional research effort, characterized instrument power draw under deliberate fouling and induced faults to map edge-case behavior for model training.

Data Infrastructure and Pipelines

  • Wrote and maintained the Python pipeline correlating text-based instrument log files against power traces — parsing logs, pulling vendor APIs, processing traces, and returning tagged data for model training. Reduced training-data preparation time eight-fold.
  • Managed and installed 75+ remote power-sensing devices at customer and internal sites, forming the data-collection substrate the predictive models depended on.
  • Authored the data-location registry, mapping data ownership, quality context, and access paths after organizational churn scattered them — the prerequisite for any trustworthy analytics or AI system over enterprise data.
  • Built an automated mechano-optical acquisition system using infrared webcams to detect liquid level in a vessel, capturing hundreds of labeled images automatically for ML training sets.
  • Reverse engineered and mapped transmission protocols between third-party equipment and Agilent products, unlocking previously unreachable data and enabling automated instrument compliance checking.
  • Created bulk configuration tooling and identified rollout risks for large-scale power-monitoring deployments, as part of a multi-year program on customer and vendor wireless communication protocols.

Emerging Technology and Business Analysis

  • Led investigation of augmented reality for industrial, educational, training, and sales applications, quantifying a ~$6.9M/year savings and growth opportunity and presenting the case to executive leadership.
  • Designed and built an internal AR pre-sales tool placing virtual instruments and specifications over real-time mobile video via motion tracking, for customer product evaluation.
  • Conducted independent surveys of field service engineers on AR use cases and unsolved problems, feeding division planning and technology road-mapping.
  • Created division-wide scoring tools evaluating novel technologies and estimating ROI using genetic scoring techniques.
  • Operated as a senior individual contributor without direct reports: scoped problems, wrote design documents, shipped the code, and set technical direction for engineers outside the reporting line.
Software Engineer / ConsultantAug 2018 – Oct 2019

Akiva Consulting, Denver Tech Center

  • One of five engineers who built a GraphQL API sustaining 10,000 requests per hour for RE/MAX Real Estate, taken from initial conception to production in eight months. Wrote the complete API documentation.
  • Learned and applied SQL, GraphQL, AWS services, ElasticSearch, cURL, and Python automation scripting on the job, reaching production-level SQL within a month.
  • Imported, cleaned, and loaded image data for 100,000 agents, 600 distinct Multiple Listing Service feeds, and office-level geolocation data.
  • Built and debugged quality-assurance automation covering 1,500 sparse fields across 120,000 individual agent records dating to 1973.
  • Partly responsible for 200% growth of the consultancy over five months. Presented to the client on the future of global real estate with a year-2099 outlook.
Production Team Systems EngineerSep 2010 – Sep 2012

Symmetricom

  • Prototyped, built, and troubleshot precision timing hardware and software in production; contributed to $3.0M in profit with a team of four.
  • Maintained the internal timing ensemble to picosecond accuracy for product disciplining, working routinely with phase noise analyzers, frequency counters, and spectrum analyzers.
  • Verified secure-area-destined systems for accuracy and stability, and modified hardware for Afghanistan theater operations.
  • Managed, upgraded, scheduled, and supervised training on a 2 kHz / 100 G vibration table used for part qualification in a simulated aerospace environment.
  • Held an active Top Secret clearance for the duration of the role.
Systems Engineer AssociateJan 2009 – Aug 2010

Lockheed Martin — Commercial Space Systems, Specialty Engineering

  • Authored reliability studies for commercial and research satellites and International Space Station modules, and presented estimates to Japanese, domestic, and U.S. government customers.
  • Built and supported portable nano-torr vacuum chambers for external site testing of sensitive components.
  • Planned and conducted hardware radiation testing at Brookhaven National Laboratory, the University of Maryland, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to determine final spaceflight availability.
  • Initiated an internal program giving engineers direct access to reliability data and programs.
TechnicianJun 1998 – Sep 2004

Main Street Automotive

  • Worked every function of the family automotive repair shop — transmission and torque converter rebuilding, diagnosis of uncommon faults, telephone and electrical wiring, carpentry, bookkeeping, marketing and mass mailing, and customer relations.
  • Earnings from the shop helped put three siblings through college without debt.
